Did Berlusconi really screw up this time?

Silvio Berlusconi has been a naughty boy. The billionaire owner of legendary football club AC Milan, who coincidentally happens to run Italy as a side-job, has finally been accused of soliciting a 17-year-old nightclub dancer and part-time sexworker Karima El Mahrough (nicknamed Ruby) for some fun between the sheets. Prosecutors also claim he abused his position of power when he managed to get her released from jail – where she was being held on charges of stealing a $3000 necklace - by claiming she was the granddaughter of Hosni Mubarak.

Berlusconi has been ducking the bullet for years when it comes to his questionable lifestyle, mostly by simply changing and creating laws to cover his own tracks. However, a march 2010 law that grants government officials immunity from prosecution has been under heavy fire since last month, giving anti-Berlusconi groups the opportunity to finally make him accountable for his actions.

Even with his immunity off the table, Berlusconi seemed to be carefree. In Italy, the age of consent is 14, and prostituzione isn’t illegal… probably because even the word prostitution sounds classy in Italian. However, combining those two facts by giving up your hard earned cash for sex with a minor is a crime, punishable by up to three years in the joint. Silvio’s defence was that the underage dancer had been introduced to him as being 24 years old. Do you believe the 74 year old grandfather?

He once said:

The link between my experience as an entrepreneur and that of a politician is all in one word: freedom

I doubt it. Even though he has provided hundreds of young beautiful girls with jobs in the personal service industry, he has alledgedly been involved in a series of political, corruption and sex scandals over the years, with allegations of embezzlement, tax fraud and bribery being about as common as pizzas in a Pizza Hut restaurant.

The trial starts at april 6, and Ruby’s uncanny resemblance to Eva Mendez (check out the 2nd picture from the right!) might be the only thing Berlusconi can even try to use as his defense. We’ll keep you informed!
